Well since this is now on the twitters, how about we talk about it.

I don't know about you, but I am going to talk about it like this:

"Wow. Looks like Jon sure dodged a bullet."

She comes off like a bitch in this.

Yeah, I could maybe see if the dude wouldn't stop talking about Magic but it seemed like he was just a guy with a hobby.

Well it's a bit more of a hobby if he's a grand champion, but yeah personally I'd be more impressed that he was successful at it and passionate about it than damning him for it.

Yeah, no, she's just a horrible person, or at least thinks her writing will sell better if she comes off like one.

That's... terrible. I mean, I'm a nerd girl looking for a nerd guy, and some people don't want the same things I do. But I wouldn't immediately be put off by a guy who was, say, an all-star football player. That doesn't define who he is. And hell, for all this girl knows, Jon the Magic champion might not have any other nerdy interests. Maybe he's also really into sports, and watches every game with his bros?

And comparing Magic to fingernail biting...? Is being a nerd suddenly a bad habit and socially unacceptable to most people...?

Precisely. From the way she wrote it, she was the one who goaded him into talking about it when he just wanted to talk about normal stuff.

I wouldn't throw a guy to the curb if he was passionate about his hobbies, though. That's just cruel. At least he doesn't sit around all day in his own filth.

It's weird. As popular as nerdy things are in other media (like superhero movies) there is still this weird stigma that comes from being into different versions of the same stuff.

I also find that there are a lot of stereotypes about the kinds of stuff nerds like. Just because I read comics and play D&D people are surprised to find out that I love Hockey.

You know what? I'm gonna take this past nerd stereotypes and say that anyone who considers a potential partner being good at or passionate about something *they* don't care about to be a turnoff is, very simply, a horrible person. That goes for MtG, but it also goes for fantasy football (and, guys, sports fannishness is TOTALLY nerdy. It's just a more socially acceptable focus).

Seriously, who the hell would want a partner like that?
