That's not a joke. Here are some quotes from Azzarello.

"But it's not going to be a superhero book. I can guarantee you that, it's not a superhero book. It's a horror book."

"the first issue's all done and we're running right up to the edge, as far as what we can get away with. We're pushing the envelope with this one. I firmly believe that that's what this character needs right now."

What do you think? I'm kind of morbidly curious to see how WW works as a horror book. We've seen it done as superhero and as mythology, but I don't think there's ever been a horror run. I might check out the first trade if it sounds interesting, but I don't think this is enough for me to pre-order it.
The horror is pants!

But I can see Wonder Woman as a sort of psychological horror-y book definitely.
You know, I can kinda see it. I've always thought that, with it's usage of different kinds of folklore and mythologies, that writers doing WW would probably benefit from approaching the stories like Hellboy does, which counts as a horror book.

And besides, when you look at stuff like the Greek Mythologies, the Gods are so twisted and messed up they would give guys like Freddy and Jason a run for their money, and since the solicits mention that WW is an enemy to the Gods as they're cruelly rampaging mankind, I think it makes some sense.
Azzarello & Chang did Doctor Thirteen. That's all I need to be enormously excited for this comic.

However, I think the "it's a horror comic" thing is something Azzarello is throwing out there to try and rope in his fans that wouldn't otherwise buy a comic starring a girl. Will it have a horror bent to it? Sure. But it'll probably still be pretty darn superheroic.
Woah, multiple comments before I even got a chance to finish the poll!
I am super psyched. I loved 100 Bullets and Azarello's run on Hellblazer was good. Wonder Woman is a character I've been meaning to get into, but kept hearing how bad her current title was. The relaunch combined with a writer I like makes for an awesome jumping on point for me.
Iiiiinteresting. I definitely agree with Jay; mythology has some twisted stuff that usually isn't commented on in the DCU, though people like Neil Gaiman have played with it in Sandman and other titles. It'll be interesting to see how they shape Greek mythos in with the DCnU, if they take that direction.
I look forward to the intercompany Herc and Wonder Woman crossover.

Actually can we get on that?

They've confirmed that the pants is no longer there.

Shit, I'd read that.
