RE: Conventions
I've only been to MegaCon in Orlando (once, because I used to live near Orlando) and SDCC for the past few years (because I live in SD). Hm, noticing a pattern!
I'll probably start going to more next year, for a bunch of different reasons. Been curious about C2E2 for a while. @djeljosevic + Comics Bulletin + Tumblr + The Ghost Engine = ???? |

RE: Conventions
![]() Not listed: About 50 Batmen (give or take); Busty girl only there to show off the amount of cleavage in her cosplay (ie most Powergirl cosplayers); Creepy males who "just want to be friends" with Powergirl cosplayers; Basement dweller who knows more about Alan Moore than you ever will on any given topic; Guy who is surprised that girls know what comics are; Girl who thinks it's a big deal to be female and read comics; Wil Wheaton fanboys/girls; Wil Wheaton; and last (but not least): People who think watching comic-based movies automatically make them huge nerds and/or authorities on comics. Not sayin these stereotypes are bad, just insanely true. Like, you could make a bingo game out of all of these types and it would be the easiest bingo game of your life. |

RE: Conventions
People intent on proving that they're the best / geekiest in the house by disparaging other people's geek cred.
People who take singular pleasure in deflating the above. NYCC was a zoo this year. Still a really good show, but holy shit, I have NEVER seen a Sunday that crowded. If you're on the west coast, I HIGHLY recommend both ECCC and Stumptown Comics Fest. The former is a great, very accessible all-purpose comics show with a lot of top-line creators but not the entertainment bleed or insane crowding of SDCC; the latter, a fantastic, more indie-focused show. Also, GeekGirlCon, which I cannot recommend enough. And, if you're a gamer-type, PAX. |

RE: Conventions
So, anybody got any tips for getting a hotel room for SDCC that is not in Tijuana without selling one of my children to pay for it?

Get one 5 miles away and just drive over at 5 AM. You think I'm kidding, and I wish I were, but unless you get some sweet hookup from your work, that's going to be the only option. |

When Curt and I (and our crew) went in 2010, we got a hotel that wasn't that expensive and was within walking distance. It was just a little ways away from all of the main hotels. We never had to get there at 5am though. |

I don't have a ticket but I was thinking about going down for a day/night to see what the insanity is all about. If you wanted to split a room or something for that (probably Saturday) night I would be down for that. Twitter Tumblr Spotify |

Last year we stayed in National City and rode the tram in, but the tram schedule was way too sporadic to want to do that again. I'll be there from Wednesday thru Sunday and have a buddy I'm rooming with, but if you needed a place to crash, we could probably work something out. Provided I can find a room, of course. To clarify, the 5 AM thing is to guarantee parking if you drive (since the hotel is 5 miles away). What can I say, I guess I went with a cautious group |
