I can't really vouch for this service myself, but my co-editor used http://www.airbnb.com/ to find a nearby place to stay, just as an alternative to prohibitively expensive hotel rooms. For extra helpfulness, every listing there has a map function so you can see how close it is to the convention center.

Also, if anyone has San Diego-centric questions, feel free to message me or ask me or whatever. I might be able to help!
