Well it might be a function of a common Japanese literature trope. I cant for the life of me remember the name of it, and have been trying to find it via google for a while. basically it's that they structure stories as subtle start with increasing intensity and detail and then a sudden stop at the height. I remember it was compared to a bird song. Man I wish I could remember the name. But it basically means that a lot of Japanese literature focuses heavily on detail and fleshing out ideas and building to a climax, and then the story stops with no wind down.

sleepless by Charlie Huston. I really like how he structures his chapters; they'll start with the more moral of the two protagonists in third person, then switch to the more amoral in first person, then to a diary the moral character writes.
