I actually really like the version of Hal in the cartoon.

It's not the boring Johns "I am the American military condensed into one badass man, so you will sit there and listen while I lecture you about awesome things I have done" Hal, it's more Silver Age Hal, who was kind of a boilerplate adventure hero, which is still better than that Johns mess.
