RE: Superman.
I really dug basically everything Kurt Busiek did on Superman when he was on the book- didn't make it through trinity, though.
All Star was pretty great and Final Crisis was basically "oh no, Superman is distracted and we're doooooomed" followed by "Superman is back and everything is going to be oookay!" so that was fun. I liked Justice League Superman more than the one in his animated series. Even when he's making difficult choices and maybe the wrong ones, he's still a great dude. beat up captain atom, doesn't matter "BACK OFF, He's Justice League." also, basically the entirety of the first ep of the second season was Superman owning everything on the screen. |

RE: Superman.
It's overstated that All-Star Superman is the best Superman story ever told, but in my eyes, it's the greatest story ever told, about anyone, or anything, ever.
The thing is that the first time you read it, it's just a really good Superman story. On face value, it's super entertaining and says a lot about the character and is just a great read. But every time you re-read it, there's something new. And when you go back, after reading it a few times, and flick through it there are so many outstanding, defining moments that it's just on a whole other level of storytelling. All the time travel stuff (but time travel gets me in any story if it's done well), the Superman Squad, revisiting Pa Kent, saving Regan from commiting suicide, THE EARTH-Q SIEGEL/SCHUSTER MOMENT, the ALL-STAR conclusion. Not to mention the oh-so-subtle and in no way confirmed Leo Quintum/Lex Luthor story. God I love that book. tumblr twitter covergallery |

RE: Superman.
As much as I like All Star Superman, Chris Roberson on Grounded made me understand Superman, have fun with Superman and then made me miss him. Reading through I got more about what Superman is that I think I did from All Star. I mean All Star is a celebration of the life of Superman and his adventures. Roberson's work for me was breaking Superman down to his core components, into something everyone could enjoy because the first time I read issue 1 of All Star Superman, I didn't like it. I didn't read comics at the time so Lex Luthor using a bomb on Superman in space was too "stupid and immature" for me. I liked only the gritty stuff. With Grounded though, you can give anyone an issue of the actual stuff and get them to know more about Superman, nothing is too "out there".
Chris Roberson made me love Superman and Superman made me love life. |

RE: Superman.
Can we all agree that Smallville is the worst interpretation of the Superman mythos?

I've really wanted to read some of Roberson's Grounded but the fact that it's a continuation of a pretty awful Superman story put me off. From what I've heard he did his best with the situation he was put in and managed to put out some pretty excellent comics, but I just haven't read them. I was going to just pick up the conclusion to give it a read, does it work as a stand alone or do I need some back story? Also I heard that the Batman/Superman one was pretty great, I'll have to get that from the back issues. Recommendations? tumblr twitter covergallery |

Roberson's Superman was good, but severely hobbled by having to clean up Straczinski's mess. I'd have loved to see what the guy was able to do with the handcuffs off. And that Superman/Batman issue is aces. Definitely worth tracking down. Dylan Todd /// Design Portfolio /// Etsy / Tumblr / Twitter |

RE: Superman.
I'm curious: what do you, fellow Superman fans (as opposed to you, guy lurking on the forum) think about Superman Returns? I mean, I know the internet hates it. I know some very sensible people who hate it too. But I just fucking love that movie so much. I know it's extremely flawed, but what the hell, so are Superman I and II.
There's more love and respect for Superman in that short scene in the Kent farm at the beginning than in all 27 seasons of Smallville. |
