RE: Sometimes, obscurity is an artist's friend
I dig this article, but it only seems to be a statement on those sort of "American Idol" people. Just because their mom told them they were the best singer in the whole wide world, those people deem themselves worthy enough of grandeur and then get ticked of when they don't get it.
How do you deal with encouragement when you aren't living on a self-inflated ego? I mean how do you differentiate your skill being good enough vs your skill never being like someone, for example, say Frank Quitely? "You draw great you should be in comic books!" "I'm totally not good enough, so I'm not submitting anything, are you crazy? Have you even looked at a comic book lately? Hell, ever?" I've had similar discussions with people and they never seem to understand what I'm trying to get across. I had an art show (a year ago?) and it sold well, because all my friends and relatives bought my art. I couldn't even get it across to people that I didn't consider it a good show because it wasn't sold to people I didn't know (a couple pieces yeah, but for the most part friends, family). Almost as if it was "I made money so I should be happy." or "Your friends like your stuff so you should be happy!" I need validation from people who have no reason to like my stuff to like my stuff. I don't know I got issues maaan. This probably makes me sound like some sort of jerk? But back(ish) on topic, to Euge, how did you know that it was time to just toss your lawyer career away and pursue this? It didn't seem like you waited on people to find you, it seems like you just said "I'm throwing myself to the wolves and we'll see who comes out on top." This post is kind of rambly so I apologize. You're competing with Adele, sure. But Adele is 21 years old. She didn't wait.
