Surprised by how polarizing this comic has been. Everywhere I look, the response is either "incredible" or "awful", which is strange because my opinion of Tony Daniel's Batman has always been "painfully mediocre". RE: Official DCnU Discussion Thread
My LCS guy (who I do trust the opinion of) raved about Detective Comics. I'm not going to buy it, but it definitely seems to be the most polarising of the lot so far.

RE: Official DCnU Discussion Thread
Quick rundown of what I got yesterday:
Batgirl - Just did not like it at all. Simone seems to have the same problem as Bendis, she can only write one "voice" and after a while it all kinds of runs together. Plus, for all the talk about Barbara getting healed, I expected some answers up front instead what is obviously going to be a long drawn-out thing. Action Comics - Loved it. Really thought it did Golden Age Superman in the modern era perfectly. It seemed to set up everything really quickly. Animal Man - Just a solid book. Foreman's art has never appealed to me before, but here it completely clicked. Swamp Thing - a little too much set-up, but I liked it and it felt very assured. OMAC - shocked, shocked how much I liked this book. Big Kirby action and Giffen's art hasn't looked this good in a long time. Admittedly, it's not very deep, but it does exactly what in needed to do. Justice League International - Some wonky dialog, but it set up the action well and got things moving quickly. Does what is says on the tin, and nothing more. Batwing- another book that shocked me with its quality. Set up the action and character really well. Going to stick with this one. Jason Urbanciz : Twitter : Tumblr : Flickr : Blogspot |

RE: Official DCnU Discussion Thread
And here's what I thought about my DCU Relaunch picks:
Action Comics - Solid. Nothing mind-blowing here. If you've read any preview interviews or Supergods, you know what Morrison's going for here: A younger, newer Superman who is the champion of the people. Which I think is great. Morales' art stumbles here and there (there are more than a few oddly-crossed eyes that bugged me), but overall, it's good stuff. Animal Man - Travel Foreman's the real selling point here, with some really stellar art. Lemire turns in a decent kick-off that catches you up on Animal Man and his status quo. Wish the wife wasn't portrayed as such a shrew, though. OMAC - The real surprise of the week. Sets up the status quo in a couple of pages and then, KA-BAM! OMAC is wrecking stuff. I read this first just in case it was awful, but man, it really killed. I am definitely on board. Swamp Thing - I'll just say that Snyder's lucky he has Yanick Paquette illustrating this thing, because this was such a boring, talky, exposition-fest. And for all that exposition, I can't really tell you what Alec Holland's deal is beyond the fact that he likes to drop plant/biology facts like all of the time and he wasn't really Swamp Thing but he kinda remembers being Swamp Thing and he made some formula? Right? Still, Yanick Paquette. Wowzers, that dude can draw. Dylan Todd /// Design Portfolio /// Etsy / Tumblr / Twitter |

RE: Official DCnU Discussion Thread
I have my full review for the DC books I've read this week up on my site: http://thenerdistheword.co.uk/post/99608...-dc-comics
I just go into a lot more detail on what I have already said. But getting back to why I like Detective so much I think it is mainly down to being genially surprised by the book. I was expecting an average book but was given a great one instead. It may not be everyone's cup of tea but I loved it. I really liked how it organically established Batman's new status-quo and it was a Batman Vs Joker story which was the best way to kick things off I think. Also Comish Gordon has gone and got the colour back in his hair now that he is de-aged. Seriously the guy's hair rocks! ![]() *swish!* |
