Shocked Comics We Love
After being extremely underwhelmed (and insulted) by Flashpoint #5 and Justice League #1, I felt aggravated and annoyed. THAT'S NO WAY TO BE. I needed something better. Why not a thread dedicated to comics that we love?

Be it a Original Graphic Novel, a 1-shot, a particular story arc, manga, webcomic or every single issue of Onslaught Unleashed, tell us what comic you adore. But don't just fill this thread up with lists of comics (no, seriously. I dont want to see an info dump of comic book names) put some thought into it. Name whatever it is and then tell us WHY you love it.

In the heart of being positive, I ask you leave your negativity at the door. If someone wants to tell about how and why they love Youngblood, that whimsically wonderful capsule of the '90s, let em! Don't need to point out the negatives or shame someone for it. So keep it real, 'blood fans! (NO PROMISES. LEAVE YOUR NUMBER)

So for the first submission: ATOMIC ROBO

Now it wasn't completely unknown to me that people were liking this book. People mentioned it here and there. But I looked at it. It looked cartoony. Cartoony in that sense of being "funny". I didn't want to buy a comic and either roll my eyes so hard I pass out or do that thing where you laugh at something that's not that funny just because you spent money on it and you need it to be funny.

Well luckily enough, I got a copy of Atomic Robo's Free Comic Book Day 1-shot. I was hopeful (mostly because what did I have to lose? It was free! Also I was riding high after reading the Thor/CaptainAmerica 1-shot) and I picked it up with the weight of a 1000 Internet personalities judging my reaction.

I never laughed so hard since my first time with Next Wave. The phrase "No one needs to die today." followed by NATIONAL SCIENCE FAIR regional 4th grade finals, will never not be funny.

But then it was over. I would have to purchase from the main series. But I was scared! Having my love of comics tempered by the recent glut of "wait for the trade" storytelling makes me extremely hesitant to jump onto a title in the middle of a series. Also I'm very neurotic about needing to be caught up on things so I don't miss anything.

So finally, FINALLY, yesterday I get the Atomic Robo Vol 1 TPB and let me tell you, it is a damn good time. A hoot, if you will!

Only 2 issues deep into this trade and I love this comic. You see when you have a comic where a robot fights giant ants, I'm sold. When in this same issue, you have characters discussing the fact that giant ants are a scientific impossibility (leading to a further discussion of 'imaginary' physics) and the sentence "Automobiles have been the best melee weapons to use against giant monsters since the '50s." and bookended by a touching tale of the sadness a robot feels by outliving all his friends? BOOK OF THE YEAR.

And that cartoony art? Scott Wegener should never be given any other work. He should only work on Atomic Robo and be paid in millions of dollars. He nails the art in this nice clean style that takes the writing to another level. He makes me sick with jealousy.

So yes friends, run out (or stay inside and find a cheap place online. Same, same) and buy ATOMIC ROBO Vol. 1: ATOMIC ROBO and the FIGHTIN' SCIENTISTS OF TESLADYNE. It's the one with the robot about to slam a giant bomb into the midst of monsters on the cover.
