This sums up my 30 minutes playing Minecraft:
Load up a world. Look around. It starts to get dark. I have no idea what to do. Darkness falls. I am struck by an arrow. I run away, right into a spider. I see a green thing. It hits me and explodes and I die. I respawn. I still have no inventory. I get killed by another exploding guy. I respawn in the same spot. Two spiders jump on me and I die. I don't know how to build anything, mine anything, fight anything. Am I supposed to have to look stuff up online to figure out how to do anything? |

RE: Minecraft
Yes, it's a lot like Dwarf Fortress that way.

RE: Minecraft
Minecraft has that achievement system now that acts sort of like a tutorial. There's also a difficulty setting for those who want to learn the rules of the game without creepers. I was pretty lost at first too. Reading stuff online or watching a video about how to survive the first night can be super helpful.
Dwarf Fortress is still completely brutal despite me having played it a lot. That said, I can't wait until they expand Adventurer mode more. Check out my podcast, Bat Issues. It's like Tom vs, but about Batman. |

RE: Minecraft
I know, right? I can get a fortress up and going, but when the assaults commence or something starts going wrong, foodwise, I'm fucked.

RE: Minecraft
One thing I learned the hard way is that the plump seeds you bring don't grow outside, so you have to find dirt in underground. Usually I get my fortress up to a nice level and then lock the doors so no immagrants can come up and ruin everything. I'm basically a Dwarf Fortress Neo-con.
That is why I play Dwarf Fortress for challenge and Minecraft for fun. Check out my podcast, Bat Issues. It's like Tom vs, but about Batman. |

RE: Minecraft
I knew the plump seeds thing, but I don't see the value in locking the doors. You'll need wood for charcoal, right? Or do you have a clearing walled off?
Also, isn't more manpower generally desirable? Twitter Tumblr Wordpress My Jam Nerdcenaries |

RE: Minecraft
So I am trying to play the free version on the site and all I'm getting is a black box... Can it run on MAC? am I an idiot and am missing something obvious? do I need an OMAC?

In my experience more workers come too fast, so I lick it until I feel I have the fortress good and stable for the people I have, and then open it back up when I'm ready. I don't lock it right away, I stockpile a lot of resources first. Check out my podcast, Bat Issues. It's like Tom vs, but about Batman. |

RE: Minecraft
Anyway, MINECRAFT! I was super sad to hear the news that snow biomes are gone until 1.9. My next idea for a project was a viking village in the snow. Now I have to wait.
Also, has anyone noticed that animals spawn all over the place in the 1.8 prerelease? I see them in trees and in water all the time. Check out my podcast, Bat Issues. It's like Tom vs, but about Batman. |
