The Next Event Comic

RE: The Next Event Comic
Do any of you guys remember The Gelatinous Flan miniseries from the 80s? I just re-read it recently and while it's not necessarily a great comic, I had to give it props for introducing characters like The StereoTypeRider and Gruff Puffin. Their spin-off series are some of my favorite books of all time. Especially the ones Brick Hollandaise wrote during his seven year hunger strike.

OH HELLS YES! A fellow Gelatin-Head! Remember how awesome Flan Wars was? Now that is how you do a Red Skies crossover.

RE: The Next Event Comic
Anyways, I’ve been thinking about picking up some trades lately but everything looks like such ass anymore. The last comic I really enjoyed was Tank Abrams: Retread and even then I only glanced at the preview pages online and nodded approvingly to myself. And of course it was cancelled before it really got rolling. It’s like everyone has forgotten how to make or even appreciate a good comic. Doc Dixon would be spinning in his grave if he saw what people have done with his once great characters.

I remember when I used to rush to the local dime store every weekend to get the latest issues of my favs from the spinner racks. If they’d just start selling comics that way again, maybe they could actually save the industry. But, whatever, nobody wants to listen to an ‘old man’, I guess, they just want to keep pushing crappy event comics and ‘go digital’ like that’s “teh answer, herp derp.” Mark my words, not gonna work, not until they fire all these crap writers who can’t appreciate history and finally bring back the true versions of their best characters.

Sigh, until then, I guess I’ll just go reread my old copies of The Purple Pros and remember how it used to be when comics were actually good.

Christ, I’m so lonely.

Oh man, so many great stories!
The team up of Gruff Puffin and the Combat-Wombat was just inspired. I mean, who else but Hollandaise could write 19 issues about two drunk guys walking aimlessly through the Latvian county-side, and make it absolutely gripping?

Please. Chip Dip is a total Tex Salsa rip-off. Also, Goatee Lad was apparently reborn as Retro Chic in last year’s (completely lame) Last Eternal Problem in Forever Time: Hyper-Flux Revenge Squad tie-in. You know, the one with that infamous final panel involving Cod the Ultra-Phish? Christ, has G. G. McPhee ever written a book where a beloved Tin Age character didn’t get decapitated or raped? And I still can’t believe how they butchered The Cut-Up Kid (literally and figuratively) in that whole mess. What happened to fun comics?

I always found those to be a little preachy what with the trans-atlantic Soap Ship voyage (especially when they had to stop the pygmies from killing that village of wallet makers by holding a Goat Luau) , but the art definitely shined through. I even liked their back-up guy, Torris? Torris Tanbull? Was that the guy? I wonder what he's up to these days.

Dude! Flan Wars was probably the greatest Red Skies crossover ever written!

I remember when it came out I was kind of pissed because it was like the 7th one they did, but in the end it just blew me away! It just had so much going for it. Hell I cried at the end, when StereoTypeRider finally came to terms with his darker side and all he had done over the years. One of the biggest tear jerkers in history man.

Well, they are, um... magical

Dude, I've been hoping for Sparks to get in on a revival of Jericho Jewel: Amish Alien for years. I mean he already wears the Spud Tulkas influences on his sleeve; AND he has a sense of whimsy that frankly, the original series lacked.

Speaking of which, I'm hoping they revive Fun Comics. Mega-Baller Duck is a childhood favorite of mine.

Son, fun comics was bought up by Copernicus books, adapted into two all aged tv series and then forgotten about 10 years ago. And I call you son because I remember this and I am hella younger.
