Smarks Only (Wrestling Thread)

That's right.

It's my forum, so there's going to be a wrestling discussion thread.

I have no idea if there is anyone else on here interested in wrestling, but I need somewhere to talk about this besides Twitter, so I hope there are a few people.

RE: Smarks Only
That's easily my least favorite moment in comics history. Well played.

You fixed it. And I'm with you...or rather, I'm with Punk, even if he is a teetotaller.

I probably couldn't hate a wrestler worse than Kevin Nash.

RE: Smarks Only
Never thought he was very talented, and I'm a guy who has always been a fan of the big man in wrestling, but only where there is serious talent. I feel like Nash had better friends than skill. I'm not a fan of the nWo angle and watching guys like Ric Flair have to job to those guys always made me a little nuts. I think there's argument that the angle itself gave WCW a much needed shot in the arm at a time where they were in danger of becoming irrelevant, but they flogged the horse to death and eventually so much midcard talent was buried under the weight of it all.

If the WWE is going in the direction they appear to be going in, it's that very aspect of what Nash represents that Punk is attacking, which works so long as they don't use this as some jumping on point to hire on a bunch of washed up old talent and get them over by jobbing guys with real support like CM Punk to them. The McMahon/HHH connection behind the scenes has always made me nervous as it involves Hunter and any of his friends getting title runs, including Nash and HBK. Just never been a big fan of "the clique" and I think their rise to popularity did a lot to hold back more talented guys for a long time.

I'm also baffled by this week's RAW. It seems the perfect moment to set up a blistering Del Rio/Mysterio feud, but instead they're washing away what good heel heat Cena was getting by having him go after Del Rio? Were I handling this, I'd have a "fix is in" conspiracy that centers around HHH and "the clique", with Nash acting more in enforcer/valet capacity. You have Punk and Cena form an unlikely alliance, two men of honor waging war against an outmoded and dictatorial regime. It culminates with HBK coming back to the ring for a tag match (maybe at Night of the Champions) with HHH vs. Punk/Cena. That enables Del Rio to continue to stoke this great heat he's getting and to hold onto the belt for a while (I'm afraid he's going to drop it immediately) which I honestly think he deserves. He's one of the most talented guys in wrestling ever and I think he needs to wear the strap for a while, legitimize his reign, give him some clean wins, then let him come back to a feud with Cena after the HHH/Punk thing has fully developed.

I'm just worried we're getting a rehash of the nWo/DX/Evolution blah blah blah.
And now it's revealed why I stopped watching wrestling. Because when I do, I tend to obsess.

RE: Smarks Only
I'd like to see Del Rio have a long title run. With everything that's happened since MITB, we're at this impasse where really interesting work can be done and every week there's the fear it's going to devolve into the same old antics. When Nash came out at the end of Summerslam, I was so mad. LIke, I'd already seen him do this kind of crap at TNA. The Legends contract guys should be doing what Booker is doing: hilarious commentary.
