Avengers, Before Watchmen, Roberson, and all that

RE: Avengers, Before Watchmen, Roberson, and all that
I kinda expected at least someone to disagree, but I guess not.

I've been less excited with Marvel for awhile, and I'm not 100% loving anything at DC. But I'm still looking forward to Dial H. I kinda feel like following the comics I like until they end or I stop enjoying them and then just taking a break from the Big Two. I don't think I could quit forever though.

Has anyone's opinion about the professionals involved changed? I'm still reading Wonder Woman and Spaceman, and I'll probably check out the next Parker book, but I really don't like knowing Azzerello and Cooke are doing the book. They aren't exceptions anymore.

Mortal men know me as the Overthinker and all that whatnot.

I don't know Azzarello or Cooke (apart from Cooke threatening to kill me that time), so I can't speak to their thinking with any kind of certainty, but I can see being put in their position and possibly thinking, "Man, if it's not me they're just going to get someone else, and it's not going to be someone as good as me, it's going to be someone like JMS (or Ethan Van Sciver or whoever you want to fill that blank in with), and I at least respect the original enough to try to do it some kind of justice and give it my best.

Oh, and they are also backing up a dumptruck full of money."

I'm not saying this is right or wrong thinking, but I'm saying, I can see going through that thought process.

This thing (Before Watchmen) was going to happen no matter what. That's not up for debate. It was going to happen. Would we rather it not happen? Obviously, but there's nothing we can do about it.

Now, we don't have to buy it or read it or support it or even talk about it, but since we are talking about it and no amount of talking will stop it from coming out, the question I find myself asking is this:
"Whether I buy or read it or not, if there has to be more Watchmen, would I rather it be by Darwyn Cooke or Tony Daniel? Would I rather an artist I respect, but who hasn't gotten nearly enough credit/notoriety for their work like Amanda Connor get rich off this, or some "hot" artist that is awful like ____________?"

I know this doesn't help the ethical dilemma some of us seem to be facing or make the wrongs perpetrated any less wrong, but sometimes you have to try to find the small victories in awful situations.

I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about all of this, and at this point, I'm sure this is the kind of thing I'm going to be struggling with for as long as I have any interest in comics.. which is to say, a very long time.

Yeah, going along with what Chris said above, the other thing to remember is that, JMS excepted (since he does movies and TV), these folks are all working writers and artists that need to work. As much as I want to believe that Darwyn Cooke is making millions off of his Parker adaptations, most likely dude is pulling down far less than I think. It's like seeing an excellent character actor as third lead in Fart School Part 6, if you want to work in this business, you need to work.

Yeah, for some reason, I have no problem with the creators involved with Before Watchmen taking the work. I mean, I'm sure it's a ton of money (shoot, if they offered me what it's reported they offered Cooke, I would have done it gladly and thrown in a complimentary scalp massage for Dan Didio while I was at it) and these dudes are freelancers with bills to pay. It's dumb and unnecessary and ethically dodgy, but … dudes gotta eat, I guess?

And Fart School 6 was waaaaaay better than part 5.

I really love Jon Morris's idea of matching what you pay (or would have paid) for movie tickets and/or big-2 comics w/ donations to the Hero Initiative

fourded. I think it at least makes me feel a little more balanced as I continue to buy the few books I'm still enjoying, at least enough that i don't need to torture myself over the whole issue as much
