Non-graphic novel recommendations
With school long since out and no one willing to hire me (apparently no qualifications and no motivation doesn't exactly get potential employers clamoring) I've been hit by the ol' mid-summer ennui.
So I'm looking for some books to read, the type without pictures, and I figured the people here might have some good recommendations.
My buying options and budget are limited, so y'know, it has to be available at places like Chapters and preferably fairly cheap.
I'm interested in sci-fi, slightly less so in fantasy, and while I've never actually gotten my hands on any, I think I could get into old school pulps like the Shadow and Doc Savage.
I'm willing to read pretty much anything provided it's good, so please, any guidance here would be good.

A couple books I'm considering:
Doc Savage His Apocalyptic Life
Bill the Galactic Hero
The Forever War

One thing you could do is ravage the shelves of your local lieberry. Books I would recommend to anyone would include Inherent Vice by Thomas Pynchon, any short work by Victor Pelevin possibly The Yellow Arrow, Omon Ra, or if you want longer Generation P, Steve Aylett's stuff is wonderful, Moscow to the End of the Line by Yerofeev is a great story about a wild trip on a train from Moscow that is riddled with drunkenness and paranoia. That's a start, at least.
Oh and if you like old west six shooter stories, Warlock by Oakley Hall is a good look at the OK Corral but with the mythological aspects striped away, presenting an insightful and fascinating look into the mining situation that precursors and drives the cowboy/Arthurian battles therein.

Because I'm back on my Dark Tower kick.

I can't help it if I've got a heavy flow and a wide set vagina!
I'm now on the Tweety!
I'm also tumbling!

While I thought it was only OK, a lot of other people really liked Chris Roberson's prose sc-fi novel, Further. It's only $3 this month on Kindle.

I ended up reading Jack the Bastard and Other Stories by Micah Nathan and it was a really solid anthology book.

Changeling and Socialfist. Check those out.

I've read Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life as well as PJF's Tarzan "biography", and while they're fun in practice, they sort of take the wind out of the source material by trying to explain how these things occured "in the real world."

My recommendations:

The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon
VALIS by Philip K. Dick
Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut
Hard-Boiled Wonderland & the End of the World by Haruki Murakami

That should get you started.
